Nobody is quite sure what Berthold is, including his parents. He was adopted by humans after being discovered in an abandoned appliance factory. He experienced as normal an upbringing as can be expected, considering his unusal origins. His parents were supportive, but spoiled him terribly. Being squat, trapezoidal and somewhat monstrous in looks, he did not make friends easily. This problem was compounded by his woefully unpleasant personality. He turned out to be unbearably stingy and arrogant. As a result, he was picked on mercilessly at school, especially because of the antenna protruding from his head, which seems to serve no purpose. It is safe to say that, despite his parents' coddling, Berthold had a very unpleasant childhood.

Regardless of this, Berthold managed to get a decent education and eventually passed his CPA exams with flying colors. His desire to become an accountant was mainly done to please his Dad, who wanted Berthold to enter a "sensible" profession. At around age 30, he met someone who eventually because his lifetime companion, Frank. Frank looks similar to Berthold, and it is believed that they may be of the same species. (Whatever that is.) The most significant thing to happen to Berthold was his experience creating Guy. At 47, Bert looked for a hobby as a diversion from his drab, routine life. He picked up sculpture and created Guy out of clay. (Almost immediately after which, he lost interest and stowed Guy away in a closet.) What he didn't realize was that Guy eventually got bored and wandered off. When Berthold met Guy in the street one day, he was astounded. This started a new chapter in Berthold's life, one which involved capturuing Guy at all costs, so he could place him in a museum and market him as "sentient sculpture", thereby gaining noteriety as the person who brought Guy to life, even though nobody is really sure how all *that* happened, anyway.
